NEEDTOBREATHE | April 4th, 2006
NEEDTOBREATHE had all the critics clamoring with the release of their debut, Daylight. In fact, so much buzz was forming around the band, they actually signed with a mainstream label (Atlantic) before also signing with a Christian label (Sparrow). Even more so, they were put on the cover of CCM Magazine before they even had a chance to make a name for themselves. Before NEEDTOBREATHE even released an album, they were creating quite a stir. So now that Daylight has debuted and we actually have some music from the band, how does it stack up?
Straight up, NEEDTOBREATHE lived up to our expectations. Daylight is a great record from start to finish. The band has an infectious flare to their sound even sounding like British popsters at times. Admittedly, it may take a listen or two before certain songs can really catch on, but it's well worth the effort.
Don't Wait for Daylight is a great intro to the disc, offering a sample of just what the listener is in for. The boys of NEEDTOBREATHE show off their Southern roots with a bit of drawl in their vocals, which adds to the versatility of the music. Great songs keep coming with Quit and hit Shine On which was even featured in the movie Employee of the Month.
The first change in pace for Daylight occurs with the track Haley. The song is a heartfelt cry to a loved one about an uncommitted relationship. Done with mostly acoustics, NEEDTOBREATHE excels in this area as well. Picking right back up again, You Are Here and Knew It All are among the many highlights of the album.
The album slows back down again for the final three tracks showing NEEDTOBREATHE handles mid-tempo songs just as well as the fast ones. I Won't Look Back provides a decent close for the album but is probably the weakest track, but even that isn't saying much for a consistently stellar album such as Daylight.
NEEDTOBREATHE has released a phenomenal record for their debut. Complaints are few and far between but some argument can be made for the lack of substantial spiritual content. The band tiptoes around the weightier issues but most consistently sticks to issues of love and love lost. Even so, NEEDTOBREATHE offers great music on this album, and it should not be passed up by any fan of the modern rock / pop-rock genre.

We rely on you, the listener, to tell us what you like so we can deliver the best music possible. Our identified core artists are those that are consistently ranked highly by a survey performed each year. If a particular song tests well, it is played with more frequency. If a song tests poorly, it is removed. Your feedback as a listener is crucial to us.
At Resound, music testing is essential to our philosophy of operation. It's your station, so you should pick the music.
